Artist Statement
I am deeply nourished and inspired by nature and strive to express the spirit and unique personality of each subject in intimate flower portraits. It is my intention to reveal depth with detail that dances on the boundaries of realism and releases the spiritual energy that animates these beautiful beings. I am both absorbed in the focus on creating what I see and amazed by what emerges that I could not have imagined. A unique work emerges that is neither a literal reproduction of the source image nor an imaginative rending inspired by it.
Technique:
Painting with colored pencils brings together my passion for color and my love of beauty. The ability to make marks that layer and blend to create luminous images is what calls me to engage primarily with this medium. There is a meditative quality to creating the paintings, as tiny marks interact with each other and with the textures of various surfaces. Beauty and harmony reveal themselves as the media are applied. Though I am continuously experimenting, my technique involves light application of many layers of pigment using a variety of small strokes. I also enjoy layering with water soluble colored pencils, often as under-paintings to provide contrast in values that dramatize the impact of hues. The properties of colored pencils allow for continuous exploration into new possibilities with many different application techniques and media available. I also enjoy creating mixed media pieces, incorporating watercolor, water soluble pencils, and pen and ink.
Background
My interest in creative expression has been with me all my life, but the opportunity to pursue creating works of art came about 15 years ago when I began transitioning from a professional career in communications, marketing, and business development coaching. The opportunity to study colored pencil and mixed media in two separate classes offered by the Portland Parks Department Senior Recreation Program opened up pathways to the new life of creative expression. I have taken and taught classes and workshops. This is an ongoing adventure of learning and creativity for which I am truly grateful.
